I just moved a working Scanjet 4P to a new P4P800 and the Deskscan
Software says it's "unable to open scanner - 1214". I'm running Win
98SE and using an Adaptec 2940AU. The device manager says it's working
properly.

The new computer is an Asus P4P800 with 1 gig memory. When I first
moved two scanners over, they froze the system; however, per Adaptec's
FAQ's, I have set the cards Initiate Sync Negotiation to "No", Max
Sync Transfer Rate to "5.0 MB/s", Include in BIOS Scan to "No", and
Enable Disconnection to "No". The Photoscan now works fine. The 4P
doesn't at all.

Help. What should I try now.

You could try setting the Sync. Transfer rate to the lowest setting
and if that don't work the only thing that i can suggest is that you
have too much memory or you Processor is too fast.

Solution found.

The inf file didn't consistently install all of the needed registry
entries. No matter how many times I uninstalled and reinstalled the
card, scanner and software, it wouldn't self correct. After I compared
the registry to another system with a successful install, I found
missing entries. I added them and the scanner lit off.
