Default Adaptec Firewire: PC won't even try to start when inserted? - 01-08-2004 , 06:57 PM

Bad day for me and Adaptec, I guess....ran out and bought both their USB-2 and
Firewire cards...

When the FireWire card is inserted, the PC won't even *start* to boot
up...Sometimes it'll give a little "urk!" and the various LED's will flash for
about a hundredth of a second, but that's it. It doesn't begin to start and
then hang - the power supply doesn't even start spinning it's fan.

Pull the card out, and it starts up normally. Put a SIIG USB-2 + FireWire
combination card in the same slot...and it starts up normally.

Not being encumbered by any real knowledge of these things, I've started
wondering if my power supply has been right on the edge and somehow this
particular card is drawing enough to put it over the line.

Is this even remotely possible?

I took the original card back to CompUSA and swapped it for an identical new
one...so I'm pretty sure it's not a bad card.

Thoughts? .... before it take both this one and the USB-2 back and try to swap
them for some other brand like Belkin...

I think you need a bigger power supply.

One's coming in a couple days. Always wanted a silent power supply and this
was my chance.

If the card still doesn't work, it's going back TB swapped for, maybe, a Belkin.

Adaptec make a card called the "Duo Connect" that is both USB 2.0 and
Firewire on the same card...you get both while only using one PCI
slot... cost about $99.00
Good Luck
