Default hp laser terrible time... - 03-14-2007 , 01:45 AM

I'm having a terrible time with this thing... We bought a new hp laser 1320
tn. We have it on a workstation. The 1320tn has 3 trays. We'd like tray 2
to print reports and be shared as //work8/tray2. We'd like tray 3 to print
forms and be shared as //work8/tray3. I know this can be done, but getting
help from hp is like pulling a universe through the eye of a needle.
The software we use does not access the windows printer dialogue to select
the tray. It just let's you enter network shares for various receipts,
reports, and the like.
We had this same scenario working on an hp laser before. I tried
installing the driver twice, but the pc always detects that the printer is
the same one, and won't install.
Any ideas? It's a usb printer. I understand about setting the tray and
type. But what I don't understand, is how to share the printer twice on the
network, to allow different features for each share. by which I mean share
1 would access tray 2 and share 2 would access tray 3.

From your post it appears that you have the printer installed directly to one
PC with a USB cable and shared across the network, is that correct?
Whilst I have not done it for this model I have installed several HP printers
the way you are attempting, something that is a common requirement for many
businesses.
In most cases with most modern HP lasers if you run the installer from CD
(having already successfully installed the printer once) the installer asks if
you wish to install a new (different) printer or install (or upgrade to) a new
driver. If you select the option to install a new printer (having disconnected
the USB cable and reconnecting it when asked) it goes through the installation
process and allows the same printer to be installed with a different name.
After this you can set up each "printer" to suit your tray requirements. This
works well with WinXP.
Is this what you have done? If so, what exactly happens?
