Default new printer recommendations please - 03-07-2007 , 03:16 PM

I need to replace an ageing HP820 printer. The thing I liked about this
printer was the relatively low running cost i.e it contains black cartridges
of 42 ml capacity. I have looked at the current models and they seem to
contain significantly less ink e.g. 21ml, 10ml etc. whereas their cartridge
costs are not much less than those for the HP820. This makes them getting on
for twice the running costs of the HP820.

I'm not too concerned re print quality as I mainly print text docs. Can
anyone recommend a current inkjet model which has high capacity cartridges
please?

TIA

If you find a printer you do like with less than the desired capacity
there may well be a large print kit , an external cartridge available .

Be careful, some of the new HP printers recycle the ink that used to be wasted
into the cartridge. This makes the page yield much better than a simple
comparison of ink cartrdige sizes might indicate.
Check the HP website to see what they say the page yield is for each printer
and compare it with other manufacturers.

HP has a new inkjet, the Officejet Pro K5400dtn. The black cartridge
is 58.5ml. It lists for $250US and has a built-in duplexer, network
connection and additional high capacity feeder. It's supposed to be
faster, 36ppm draft, and 25% cheaper per page to operate over lasers.
I was thinking about getting a color laser to replace my aging HP970,
then I came across this. Still undecided. Oh, you can get a WiFi version
for $280 on sale from HP shopping.
