Default Dell 924 - Lexmark all-in-one equvalents? - 05-15-2007 , 08:24 PM

I have a Dell 924 all-in-one printer/scanner that came free with my
new Dell computerabout a year ago. I have only recently taken it out
of the box and installed it. It is obviously a re-badged Lexmark
all-in-one printer/scanner.

I wondered if it would be possible to keep ink costs down by using
compatible ink cartridges rather than the fairly expensive Dell items.
Do the cartridges for the equivalent Lexmark product work in the Dell
924 printer/scanner? If so, which is the Lexmark equivalent product?

Any ad all help would be greatly appreciated. This is part of a setup
for my son so he doesn't have to wait his turn to use my Epson inkjet
and HP laser printers which are in near-continuous use for my
business.

Some web searching shows that Dell has kept the Lexmark proprietary
lock-in, but switched it so you can only use Dell ink. (It's things
like this that make me wonder why people love Dell and keep going back
for that type of abuse.)

suggests that you can buy Lexmark ink and switch the Dell "lids" onto
the Lexmark cartridges. That's unlikely to be very practical. There
are places that sell refilled ink which may cost less.

Buy him a used laser for the price of a couple of ink cartridges. If he
needs color printing, check the supplies cost first.

Thank you so much for this. It appears that I will just have to buy
Dell ink. The Dell high capacity cartridges are reasonably priced.

I already have a black and white laser and have bought my son an Epson
Picturemate. He needs a printer for colour in sizes larger than 4x6
inches and up to A4 (US Letter) - hence the Dell 924. I had already
paid for it (included free with the PC) so the only cost is the ink.
