Default Does Photoshop CS3 support 14-bit raw files from Nikon LS-4000? - 05-11-2007 , 07:49 PM

When I scan with my Nikon LS-4000 and generate 130MB 14-bit per color raw (.NEF) files, when they are opened
in Adobe Photoshop CS (CS1), they are 8-bit. Does CS3 open them as 14 (or 16) bit?

What are they saved as ?? is the scan at 14bit and the output saved
file 14bit or 8bit.

I cannot speak for CS1 (suspect it is the same), but my Photoshop CS2 opens
NEF files in its ACR plugin (Adobe Camera Raw), which has a selectable choice
near the bottom of its window where you specify if ACR is to output 8 bit or
16 bit images.

I said "130MB 14-bit per color raw (.NEF) files"

The files are 14-bit. CS1 opens them as 8-bit.

CS1 doesn't have that option.

Looks like there's some CS3 in my future.

A bit more investigation revealed that Adobe Camera Raw 2.4 (the last one that works with CS1)
doesn't support LS-4000 NEF files at all. They were being handled by a .NEF plugin that got installed
with Nikon Picture Project for my point-and-shoot (D70). It's Nikon's fault. ;-)

D70 owners: do not be insulted. My previous point and shoot was an F4. ;-) It's just the camera
I keep around for when stuff happens.

This is what you need at present, you can batch convert to DNG, open
raw, adjust then open it in PS CS1 with limited support for 16 bit stuff.

That's DNG/Adobe Raw 3.7. Only works on CS2. And doesn't support the LS-4000.
Nor does Camera Raw (haven't tried the DNG converter) 4.0 on CS3. Mumbles "Could
not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." Works fine on
D70 raw files. And can even see the thumbnail for the LS-4000 raw file, though that may
be coming from Micorsoft's thumbs.db.
