Default Latest Windows XP driver for 29160n? - 03-12-2007 , 02:15 PM

I am trying to follow a suggestion that I install the latest driver
for my SCSI controller (29160n, in Windows XP) to see if it will
correct a puzzling intermittent problem I'm having with my backup tape
drive.

Adaptec's "Windows XP Downloads" page lists two downloads that could
be relevant: "Ultra160 Family Manager Set 4.0 SP5 S4 for Windows" and
"Ultra160 SP4 Drivers for Windows 2000 and XP." They appear to contain
the same driver files.

I have downloaded both and tried to install them. With both, the
Installer displays a message that says, "Cannot Continue the Hardware
Update Wizard / The wizard could not find a better match for your
hardware than the software you currently have installed."

The driver I have installed is version 5.1.2600.1106, dated 7/1/2001.
The downloads both have files dated February and March 2004, and
version number 6.4.630.100.

It appears to me that the Hardware Update Wizard is simply mistaken;
both of the packages I downloaded have a driver with a later date and
version number than the one installed.

Should I tell the Hardware Update Wizard to install the driver I
downloaded even if it is not "the best match for your hardware"? Or,
is the wizard trying to tell me something legitimate, meaningthat if I
Install the driver, I will get in trouble?

Like your PC might blow up?

I made a mistake there. The installer does not give me the options of
keeping the existing driver or installing the new one. It gives me
the options of keeping the existing driver or going back to select one
that it will like better.

So, my original question is moot. The question of how to install the
driver, or how to find a driver that will install, is quite alive.

If anyone can offer an answer that is informative rather than sarcastic,
Are you saying that the sarcastic answer was no reason to recheck your
assertions and therefor was not informative?
