Default Good Utilities for Testing Hard Drives for Errors? - 03-26-2006 , 01:02 AM

What are some good software utilities for surface testing hard drives for
errors under Windows 2000 / 2003? We were using IOMETER for a while, but
recently it has stopped working because some other program is taking a TCP
port it wants to own, and it also appears that development has stopped on
IOMETER. What are some better commercial alternatives?

Hi Will,
I can recommend a product called SCSI Fibre toolbox. We have been using
it for years for disk and tape testing.

SCSI Toolbox is nice but it is very low level. I'm looking for a higher
level utility that will test a disk for hours with a heavy workload and
check for errors during the process.

What about SpinRite? It won't work "under" Win 2k or anything else. But
the most recent version uses Windows to create it's own boot disk. It
can be booted and run from just about anything after that, including
flash drives if needed. It's very intensive, but you can change the
testing level as desired. It's been though a major update in the last 18
months or so.

Unfortunately the test box has other uses, so Windows is a requirement.

Maybe SpinRite would consider implementing their tool as a virtual machine?
